A nonverbal method for solution, connection and transformation

The sandplay experience can be intellectual, emotional, mystical or a blend of all three, depending on which frameworks come forward to meet your intention. Sandplay itself is a method that uses a tabletop sandbox and a library of symbolic figurines to allow inspired thought to stream directly from the psyche and into the conscious mind. The technique was invented by child psychologist Dora Kalff who based it on the principles of Carl Jung and his discoveries about how the human psyche brings ideas into consciousness.

A large portion of your brain – especially the part that is responsible for receiving inspiration – works nonverbally. Instead of using language to process information, this part uses sensory input, emotions and symbols. This is why we dream in feelings and pictures.

When we are under stress or in a fear response and trying to "brainstorm" by relying solely on language to communicate ideas, the dependency on words can create a rift between the verbal and nonverbal parts of the brain. Sandplay is a bridge. When the right brain selects a figurine that holds symbolic meaning, the left brain begins to understand and the creative rift dissolves, opening up the possibility for flow and emotional connection.

How an in-person session works
When you arrive for your sandplay at the Los Angeles studio, you'll first spend some time talking with Kate about your intention or issue and any context that feels relevant to your area of inquiry. Next, you'll be introduced to the sandplay area and guided through a 45-minute process that uses relaxing music, light movement and breathing to support it. Afterwards, you'll be led through a discussion of your sandplay journey, allowing it to reveal the answers it holds to your initial question.

3-hour sandplay
3-hour sessions are beneficial for focused project work or used as a weekly or monthly series.

5+ hour sandplay
The 5+ hour intensive is flexible in length and alleviates the pressure of a time clock. In other words, it takes as long as it takes, and you can relax in the process. Intensives are popular for people working through major life transitions or complex problems.

Sandplay via Zoom

Video: Kate demonstrates a sandplay experience on Zoom.

Zoom sessions are shorter (2.5 hours) and different in that the nonverbal and verbal parts are more blended. Most of the session takes place with both you and Kate gazing at the sandbox as the main screen. First, you'll discuss your intention or issue for the session and any context around it that feels relevant. Next, you'll be guided through a breathing exercise to gently open your intuition and stimulate any thoughts, images, memories or sensations that come forward.

Kate will build images in the sandbox using figurines that physically mirror what is present in intuitive form so that the sandbox becomes a 3D representation of your psyche. The guided process will explore how your higher consciousness or inner genius is revealing the answer to your inquiry and how to integrate that into your life or project moving forward.
