There is only one story. And it hand-picked you to be its teller.

If there's only one perfect version of the story you are trying to tell (we're going to disregard the other watered-down versions that miss the mark), then the question becomes: how can we facilitate and organize your mind so that your story can come through intact, inspired and on demand?

The Sand Mirror system is a surprising, unconventional method using physical, intellectual, and intuitive tools that connect to the non verbal part of your brain. The studio offers a safe, emotionally supportive space for the simple reason that you have access to more of your brilliance when you feel good.

Sure, writing by torture can work. But pleasure is faster,  sustainable and leads to better results.

Let’s talk about how your brain works with inspiration.

A large portion of your brain – especially the part that is responsible for receiving inspiration – works non verbally. Instead of using language to process information, this part uses sensory input, emotions and symbols. This is why we dream in feelings and pictures.

When we are under stress or trying to "brainstorm" by relying solely on language to communicate ideas, the dependency on words can create a rift between the verbal part of our brain and the non verbal part where inspiration, imagination and creativity are centralized.

In other words, an inspired thought can get stuck if we try to force it into words too early in the creative process.

The Sand Mirror system is a bridge. It works with archetypes and symbols, either in the form of pictures or toy objects. When the right brain selects an object that holds symbolic meaning, the left brain begins to understand and the creative rift dissolves, opening up the possibility for flow.

The Sand Mirror system replaces the act of staring at a computer screen while hoping for inspiration with a full body experience that ‘downloads’ information directly from your psyche.

Sand Mirror uses a tabletop sandbox and a library of symbols to allow inspired thought to stream directly from the psyche and into the conscious mind. The original technique, sometimes called "sandplay", was invented by child psychologist Dora Kalff who based it on the principles of Carl Jung and his discoveries about how the human psyche brings ideas into consciousness.

The Sand Mirror system assists creative professionals in manifesting work, breaking though blocks and providing a process that is restorative, rather than self-destructive. It is a psychology-backed method that provides guidance into the mystery of your mind in order to retrieve creative answers.

(Note: an adapted version of the Sand Mirror system is currently being offered via Zoom during COVID-19.)

Each session is a personal or group intensive designed to put the mind into a relaxed state so that the unconscious – or the space where our creative muses live – can flow through effortlessly without triggering over-thinking or emotional blocks.

Although the experience of a Sand Mirror session feels restorative, the main goal of the system is to help clients produce work and meet intentions. (Please note that the studio founder, Kate VanDevender, works in the creative field. She is not a licensed therapist).

Clients include writers, actors, directors, producers, designers and many other kinds of visionaries. Sand Mirror works well for any stage of project development, from origin to revision.

Meet Kate VanDevender

Professional Writer + Intuition Coach

After working in several television writers' rooms, I became curious about the language that industry professionals use to talk about the creative process. For a comedy writer like myself, the standard process is often described like this:

Break the story.
Beat out scenes.
Vomit out a first draft.
Punch it up.
Write jokes that kill.
Make the deadline.

Break, beat, vomit, punch, kill, dead. Why do we talk about the creative process using the language of its opposite, destruction? If an artist is trying to birth a baby, why make them do it in a war zone?

Sand Mirror is a system for creative professionals to experience breakthrough using the means of pleasure. It is a place of simultaneous restoration and manifestation for those who may be exhausted by toxic work environments, suffering from the cumulative effects of industry pressure, dealing with debilitating fear and anything else that strangles creative flow.

My clients have discovered that self-loathing, fear, desperation and crisis are not the only (nor the best) portals into creativity. I offer a process and physical tools to forge a connection to your psyche and a way to nurture a creative spark into a completed work with depth, specificity and the joy of discovery.

I invite the curious, the exhausted, the stuck, those in the suffocating grasp of creative crisis and anyone simply looking to work through an idea using a nuanced methodology of play.

Sand Mirror is a system for you to meet and commune with your inner visionary in order to create exactly what you want. Welcome.
